Maca is a hearty root vegetable plant which grows in the high Andean plateaus of Peru at altitudes as high as 14,500 feet above sea level. Little is known about the origins of MACA, but the plant is believed to have been cultivated in the Junin Plateau region of the Central Highlands in an area called Cerro de Pasco as far back as 2,000 years ago. The Inca's of Peru were sophisticated builders and cultivators of the land and may have been responsible for the cultivation of MACA which have been found in archaeological sites. Many legends exist about the nourishing powers of MACA, such as it's ability to promote sexual desire and increased energy. The only area where this particular species of MACA is found is a region of extreme weather conditions such as freezing, high winds, and intensive sunlight. No other food plant exists in the world which will grow at so high an altitude and survive.

The rich soil located at these high plateaus of Peru were it is very cold and oxygen poor may account for the high levels of trace minerals found in MACA. The Peruvian Indians of today still grow it in the same traditional way without pesticides or chemicals. The healing qualities of MACA have helped the local native population thrive in this oxygen - poor plateau where they live.

MACA contains substantial amounts of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, vitamin B1, B2, B12, C, E, riboflavin, thiamin and ascorbic acid. The fertility powers of MACA are prized by couples in the Peruvian highlands. Men and women who fail to conceive a child eat MACA on a regular basis until conception occurs. In 1961, Dr. Gloria Chacon de Popovici, a biologist in Lima, Peru, published her studies when her research scientifically demonstrated the increased fertility in animals using MACA. To date her work on MACA is unmatched and she is considered the most knowledgeable person on the subject  of Maca.

Dr. Chacon's work answered important scientific questions about MACA, which contains essential  amounts of fatty acids such as linoleic, palmitic and oleic acids. MACA is rich in sterols and has a high mineral content as well. In addition to its rich supply of essential nutrients, MACA contains four alkaloids, tannins and saponins. A chemical analysis shows the presence of biologically active aromatics which have unique aphrodisiac properties. Analysis of MACA properties indicates that the effects on fertility are a direct result of glucosinolates found in MACA. Dr. Chacon discovered the four alkaloids present in MACA that are responsible for MACA's reputed positive effect on hormonal balancing issues such as hot flashes, memory problems, fatigue, mood swings and male impotence more than forty years ago as a 20 year old student at the University of San Marcos, in Lima, Peru. She continues her lectures and symposiums on a regular basis to the medical world.

The popularity of MACA world wide is growing at an enormous rate. The outstanding benefits of increased energy, enhanced stamina, mental clarity, increased athletic endurance, hormonal balancing, male and female impotence difficulties, erectile dysfunction assistance, menopause, perimenopause and menstrual symptoms and essential aphrodisiac capabilities. Women with menstrual irregularities have experienced greater consistency, while women with hot flashes, mood swings and most associated perimenopause and menopause symptoms have diminished dramatically

macaroots-asst.jpg (14806 bytes)Much confusion exists about MACA and the different species of MACA that are being sold. The only species backed by scientific studies is Lepidium peruvianum Chacon. Named after the researcher, Dr. Gloria Chacon de Popovici, this MACA is known to contain all the nutrients and alkaloids responsible for the medicinal and beneficial effects MACA is known for. Only Lepidium peruvianum Chacon has scientific studies behind it. Dr. Chacon works directly with A Healthy Alternative, LLC to insure and guarantee the high quality and organic quality of our MACA. Other species called MACA are wild and do not grow in this specific region of Peru and do not meet the medicinal and nutritional standards of Lepidium peruvianum Chacon. To further the confusion, in the last few years a term standardized has entered the market place.

Are Any Doctors In The United States Using MACA? Gary F. Gordon, M.D., former president of the American College for the Advancement of Medicine, now Founder and President of the International College of Advanced Longevity Medicine, located in Chicago, Illinois, bases his appreciation of MACA on his own experience of it and states that MACA improves the quality of life in the area  of sexuality.

Henry Camponile, M.D., of St. Petersburg, Florida states that his first menopausal patient "started to feel better four days after she began taking Maca", and finds that it promotes energy unlike any other herb he has used.

Dr. John Lichtenstein, M.D. acupuncturist and Family Medicine practitioner, agrees that Maca is an herb that is of great benefit.

Dr. Richard Brown, M.D. author of STOP DEPRESSION NOW, says that Maca holds great promise for the health and well being of men and women.

The benefits of MACA are not limited to older adults. The herb supports hormonal functioning in younger adults as well, and athletes have been reporting increased energy and stamina in their workout's. Teenagers have also benefited from it's effects on hormone-balancing and acne.

Will I Have To Take MACA For The Rest of My Life?  No, since MACA is not replacing hormones it is fine to start using the herb at any time and to stop without any danger to the body. It is advisable not to use it continuously but to alternate periods of taking the herb with periods of rest from the herb to maximize the body's response to MACA. For example, stay on 120 days and off 30 days might be a good rest period for the body.

How Does MACA Compare to Other Menopausal Herbs Like Black Cohosh or Other Women's Formulas?
MACA provides the ingredients to support menopausal health. The herb works through the hypothalamus and pituitary to help insure balanced and healthy hormone levels in the body. Many men and women notice the difference within a week! MACA helps promote sexual functioning, insures vaginal lubrication, and, in general, brings about all the benefits of healthy, balanced hormone levels in the body. Black Cohosh, licorice root, and soy products all contain weak plant estrogens. Many women do not feel a difference when they take these herbs or the effect is not lasting. For this reason we feel MACA is a better choice.

MACA's Effect on Sports Performance: Athletes have continuously reported incredible endurance and performance, while body builders have also shown a greater ability to maintain endurance with minimal fatigue.

Can MACA Be Taken With DHEA? Many people have used MACA with DHEA  and they have not experienced any negative reactions. But when they did discontinue the use of DHEA they generally had the same positive effects without the use of the hormone, DHEA.

How Effective Is MACA As An Aphrodisiac? MACA's ability to act as an aphrodisiac is well known. Ask almost any South American if they have ever heard of MACA and they will probably smile back and say "Oh, yes, Spanish Viagra™". MACA is not Viagra™, but it does nurture the hormonal system so well that a healthy hormonal balance is restored and the body can operate at optimum conditions. Some studies have recently indicated that the reason for the libido enhancing effect of MACA is due to isocyanothides and fatty acids. Further research is needed.

How Does MACA Balance Hormones?
MACA is an adaptogen herb. This means the herb will work in the body according to the needs, age and gender of the person using MACA. If a woman is entering menopause and is perimenopausal, begins having symptoms related to a change in hormone production such as fatigue, night sweats, dizziness or palpitations, it is very likely her hormones are no longer being produced in amounts that can work in concert with each other. For example, her estrogen production may be normal but her progesterone production is unable to keep up with it. Or, as she begins menopause, her estrogen production may drop off leaving her with too much progesterone. Or the production of both these hormones could be too low for her to maintain a good quality of life before and after menopause. MACA has been shown to promote the body's production of the proper amounts of hormones to maintain health. Even in men testosterone levels will increase.  What Is Peri-Menopause

How Effective is MACA For Fertility? MACA has been known to increase a  women's ability to conceive rather dramatically. This happens because of MACA's ability to promote the production of the Luteneinizing Hormone (LH). The LH causes ovulation. MACA has also been shown to increase sperm counts in men. Research studies on animals were conducted by Dr. Gloria Chacon and Dr. with extremely successful results in almost all cases! (These studies will be published later on this year.)

Are There Any Side Effect's?  After thousands of years of use as a food in South America and the recent extensive increase in the consumption of MACA in this country there are no known side effects. However, ongoing concerns exist about the species and purity of MACA being sold. For this reason Imperial Gold Maca™ is certified by Dr. Gloria Chacon as the species and purity of MACA (Lepidium peruvianum Chacon) and as having been grown in accordance with her discoveries 40 years ago.

What Is The Difference Between Meyenii Walp MACA And Yours?  Meyenii Walp and other species of MACA like plants can grow wild and at lower altitudes in parts of Bolivia, Argentina and Peru. The MACA like plants are then harvested under less than optimal conditions with flowers and weeds that grow at these lower altitudes.

Imperial Gold Maca is guaranteed to be grown at the proper altitude of 13000 feet and above. No other plants grow at this altitude and survives. Imperial Gold Maca™ is 100% pure MACA root and is certified to be the correct species of plant. Is never radiated but sun dried or warm air blown dried. Is organically grown without pesticides or chemicals.

Can Children Use Maca?  Dr. Gloria Chacon had performed tests over a period of time with the assistance of Dr. Jorge Aguila Calderon and Dr. Freddy Madrid Gironda on local children in Peru, with similar results as adults received. Children who had trouble with attention and staying focused, were relieved considerably of these symptoms, in addition, they become more alert and calmer.
